The MMK was formed at the end of 2005 through the fusion of serious discussions. The party believes that the dependent economy, globalization, neglect of indigenous resources and even the production of essential commodities being in the hands of few persons poverty, are the main causes for unemployment, backwardness and other social inequalities and economic disparities.Therefore, Makkal Manadu Katchi states that unless the economy is self-reliant, use indigenous resources, ignore globalization and production of the essential commodities are with the masses, the poverty, unemployment, backwardness and other social inequalities and economic disadvantages cannot be eradicated. The president of the MMK is the advocate K.Sakthivel. ==History== This party came into existence immediately after Mr Sakthivel had written a Book on Globalisation – A Slave Economy in Sept 2005. Friends and well-wishers mostly consisting of Advocates who read the Book of Mr Sakthivel suggested that an awareness on creation of self-reliant India, opposing globalisation. Therefore, for the purpose of creating awareness a forum under the name MAKKAL MANADU meaning people's conference was formed in Sept 2005〔(The Hindu : Tamil Nadu / Chennai News : Meetings to protest globalisation planned )〕 and a number of meetings〔(The Hindu : Engagements / Chennai : In Chennai Today )〕 held in various parts of Tamil Nadu. It was realized that with a mere forum no effective awareness could be created among the people and it was only through a political platform an awareness could be created and could make people conscious of any subject that is being taken up.
